Mt.Katahdin - Baxter State Park

Mt.Katahdin, in the heart of Baxter State Park, Maine, should be on the list of anyone looking for a winter adventure in an alpine setting. The following pages describe a trip to the park in February 2001 by a group of 4 individuals intent on climbing the Cilly Barber route. This is an obvious 2000' line right up the center of the cliff rated at Grade IV.

All of the routes on Katahdins face are of a serious nature. The length, cold and the remoteness of the mountain make it a serious commitment for anyone. This also adds to the experience.

From a distance, Mt.Katahdin looks impressive but harmless.

Unfortunately because of the trees on the way in you don't get to see the mountain for another day or so, and boy hasn't it grown. And didn't it get steep and icy all of a sudden.
